This is the image that Google have chosen to mark the birthday of Jorge Luis Borges, a name which until I went to university I pronounced as “George Looey Borje” instead of the more correct “Horhay Lueece Borkess”. If you are unfamiliar with his works, you need to do something about that. He wrote science-fiction stories, but set in medieval times. Or historical stories set in the future. It’s hard to tell sometimes. Lots of his stories involve books or libraries. The Doctor Who episode “Silence in the Library” (and anything else you’ve seen involving books and libraries) is clearly inspired by his stories.

Like Umberto Eco, he frequently invents sources, which, intermingled with real sources, are impossible to verify. Also, he lived and worked in a library, so even I’m not sure which of them are real. He invented languages and entire alien cultures. And unlike the more-often proclaimed works of, say, HP Lovecraft or HG Wells, Jorge Luis Borges works have a strange, timeless quality about them. There are very few indications that they were written when they were (although if books ever go out of fashion that will change), and the language is simple and clear.

He wrote a story about a man who decided to write Don Quixote by Cervantes, but without ever looking at the book (so he had to fight in the Spanish civil war, develop a dislike for Muslims, etc.). He wrote a story about a civilisation whose every facet of life and government is determined randomly, by lottery. And despite my incorrect claim that it was inspired by a spelling error, my attempt to start a new religion was, in fact, directly inspired by Jorge Luis Borges.

Get a book of Jorge Luis Borges short stories. If you have any sense of imagination or literature at all, you will love them unconditionally. I promise.

Featured in this conversation were the general ideas that gay marriage shouldn’t be legalised because it doesn’t feature in the definition of marriage and also that such “messing about” with words has led to the failure of the American education system.
